Learning to Bike

Rory is a strong, independent, self-motivated little girl. She excels at everything she tries and she is very athletic. However, when it comes to biking, she has zero confidence. We’ve tried using strider bikes for a few years but she just didn’t get it. We didn’t want to start her on training wheels because we didn’t want that crutch. We also live in the mountains on a hilly dirt road so learning to ride has been a challenge. Prior to camp she would get on her bike, wobble, then jump off of it, kick it and cry that she couldn’t do it. It lasted all of 30 seconds. She was quite nervous about coming to camp. Each day she would be excited and happy when I picked her up because the counselors made it fun and she was surrounded by happy kiddos that were in the same boat. By Friday, the counselors said she was able to put one foot on at a time on the pedals and that she was getting her balance. We got out to the car and before I could put her bike away she hopped on it and started striding! She squealed with excitement. After lunch she wanted to try it again. She put both feet on the pedals and took off, and hasn’t looked back!! She always had it in her – the Learn to Bike camp gave her the confidence she needed to make it happen.
