This is a great opportunity to combine skills development and leadership training with a summer of rewarding work with great people. Our Leader in Training (LIT) program provides a solid orientation to working in the outdoors with youth through personalized development plans, mentoring, certification, and training. Our most senior staff will provide the LIT training and supervision throughout the summer.
The program begins the first week of summer vacation. Teens will participate in an intensive six-day staff training which will provide guidance on all aspects of the Avid4 Adventure summer day camp program. Certifications and training will prepare participants to be contrivuting members of our summer staff. This phase will take place from 9-5 each day, meeting and ending at the Watershed School in Boulder.
The following week, LITs will embark on a backpacking trip to Rocky Mountain National Park with our most experienced staff. The backpacking section will begin at the Long's Peak Trail Head. We will carry everything we need to eat, stay warm, and be happy on our backs, and we will hike in to a backcountry base camp, Battle Mountain group site. We will spend two nights here, enjoying the high alpine surroundings right below the 14,000' Long's Peak. This backcountry experience is truly unique for kids of this age.
After this experience, LITs will be ready for the challenges and thrills of working with children in the outdoors. They will be invited to spend two weeks as LITs for our Front Range day camps and two weeks at our sleepaway resident camp. During these weeks LITs will assist staff in all program elements, including outdoor activites, group initiatives and problem solving activities, managing challenging behaviors, playing silly camp games, and providing a classic Avid4 experience to all kids in the program. On short, these weeks will provide a wonderful learning opportunity for your children to mature, develop leadership skills, teach basic outdoor skills, and further develop their passions and interests in working with elementary-aged children.
In addition, the week of June 28, LITs will have the opportunity to further develop their own leadership and technical outdoor skills. The group will spend one day climbing a Boulder Flatiron, one day mountain biking at Centennial Cone near Golden, and also spend a day with a senior staff further developing their personal leadership skills. These experiences will provide a solid technical skill foundation for the LITs no matter what they pursue in later years.
During the summer, LIT's will receive ongoing evaluation and feedback. They will create a personal development plan that allows them to develop skills and techniques over the summer. At the conclusion of the summer, LIT's receive a formal written evaluation.
This is an ideal summer work experience that will provide a strong foundation for further work with youth in the outdoors, or other related fields.
