Avid4 Adventure Leadership Team

David Secunda – Program Director

Avid4Adventure founder David Secunda has made his livelihood not only as a lifelong outdoor enthusiast and outdoor industry leader, but also as a parent and an educator. “Some of the most incredible experiences that I’ve had with my daughters have been either outdoors or while traveling. These environments provide both kids and parents with prime opportunities to grow and enjoy adventures together.” His bicycle trip across New Zealand with his wife and 11-month-old daughter is just one of these types of trips David has embarked on in the last 20 years. Secunda is the recipient of the Jim Rennee Outdoor Industry Leadership Award, the Woodchuck award (20 years in the outdoor industry), and was named CEO of the Year by the Denver Post in 2000. Secunda has a BS in Outdoor Recreation and a BA in Psychology. Previously he has served as the Director of Outdoor Education at CU, Boulder, the President of the Outdoor Industry Association, and the CEO of PlanetOutdoors. Mariah Fogarty-Sears – Denver Camp Director & Camp Eden Resident Camp Director

Mariah’s love for the outdoors has been lives in many environments and with many different populations. Mariah worked as an instructor for Outward Bound Discovery in Florida leading canoe trip for adjudicated and at risk youth for three years after college. Mariah’s real outdoor love is the mountains, leading her to many beautiful and remote places including the Front Range. Mariah spent this past year working in a middle and high school here in Boulder. Mariah is a certified NOLS mountaineering and backpacking instructor. She has her Wilderness first responder as well as CPR and first aid certifications. It is the ability of the wilderness to humble us one moment and empower us the next that draws Mariah back to working in the outdoors year after year.

Sarah Pekala – Boulder Day Camp and School Program Director

Sarah has been teaching in the outdoors for the past eight years. She attended school at the University of North Carolina at Asheville and graduated with a degree in natural resource management. Sarah has a varied background in outdoor programming and leading backcountry trips. Much of her experience began during college, where she was actively involved in her university’s outdoor program, UNCA Outdoors. After graduating, Sarah went in search of bigger mountains and found herself in Colorado. Over the past few years, Sarah has played in the woods with different organizations, including time spent as an instructor for the National Outdoor Leadership School. “My passions lie in teaching children and inspiring them through new activities and places. When he’s not playing at work, Aaron continues to play outside, whether he’s biking, skiing, climbing, or playing soccer.

Richard Vercoe – Camp Consultant

While Richard has been working in the outdoors–as a guide, environmentalist, naturalist, and firefighter–for over 15 years now, it was only in the last 7 years that he has been working full-time professionally with kids in the outdoors. The reason for this dedication? “Because nature itself is the most perfect learning environment for complete development in young people,” he says. “In nature all aspects of a person are allowed to develop; the intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual.” In addition to his leadership at Avid4 Adventure, Vercoe (pronounced ver-ko) is the director of development for Ayacara International, a group that focuses on youth development and human development in South America through outdoor recreation and environmental education. Richard is a Wilderness First Responder and certified sea kayak guide; he also recently worked as a cycling guide for youth groups on expeditionary cycling trips along the Pacific Coast. With degrees in Nature and Culture from the University of California, and Environmental Studies and Anthropology from Sierra College, Richard is an obvious asset and a foundation instructor of the Avid4 Team. “I really enjoy working with youth in the outdoors as the combination produces an endless source of energy and learning for both the kids and me as well as a greater level of appreciation and understanding of the natural world.”

Paul Dreyer – Camp Consultant

“I love seeing kids challenge themselves and accomplish something that they never thought they could do,” says Paul, himself an 8-year outdoor-education veteran. From biking across Europe or rafting the Grand Canyon, to hiking and biking the trails around his home in the mountains outside of Boulder, he just loves to be outside. Dreyer is a Wilderness First Aid Instructor with Wilderness Medical Institute and has guided river trips and bike trips throughout the Western U.S. He has an M.A. in School Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado.

All through his childhood his parents took him hiking; climbing; biking; canoeing; and orienteering, which he took to a competitive level for club and country. A graduate of The University of Birmingham, UK, he started work in the outdoors with the Universities Outdoor Education centre and progressed to head climbing guide, becoming a qualified Single Pitch Instructor and Rock Instructor through the United Kingdom Mountain Leader Training Association. Ian also founded Back-Up New Zealand, a non-profit working with people with disabilities in the outdoors. When not working for Avid Ian can be found Ski Patrolling at the local Eldora Mountain Resort, climbing and skiing with his wife, playing with his 1-year-old daughter or watching James Bond films.

Matt Nolen – Paddle Sports Program Supervisor

Being outside has always been a part of his life and is a passion to be shared with others. Matt is fortunate to return to a camp setting after spending the past three summers conducting forestry field work in across Colorado and the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee. Previously he was an adventure educator for Camp Wesley Woods located just outside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A 2007 graduate of the University of Tennessee with a B.S. in Forestry, Matt made the move to Colorful Colorado in the fall and spent the winter as an alpine and telemark ski instructor. Tzvi is very excited to be working as part of the Avid4 Team.

Chris Brule – Instructor

From the age of three, Chris spent his winters at a local ski area in central Massachusetts, where his true passion for the outdoors developed. He competed in alpine ski racing for 12 years before trading his race skis for powder skis, and now his winters are spent in the backcountry of Vermont. For several years, Chris shared his passion with kids, teaching ski racing and assisting in developing a kid’s freestyle ski and snowboard program. After a backpacking trip to Grand Teton National Park, he decided to relocate to the west post-graduation. With a B.S. in Business Administration from Anna Maria College, Chris spent his last winter working at a ski shop, chasing snowstorms and competing in free skiing competitions. He is now on his way to perusing a career in outdoor adventure sports.

Once the snow melts, Chris can be found mountain biking, trail building, hiking, kayaking, wakeboarding and playing frisbee.

Currently he lives in Longmont and enjoys all the mountains have to offer.

Emily Carroll – Instructor

Emily’s love of the outdoors has been evolving since she was young, when she spent her time exploring the woods in her neighborhood and riding her bike. Since then, she began rock and ice climbing and has been a self-practiced yogi for four years and a tennis player for eight. Emily has been working outdoors with children for three years as a counselor and Program Director at Waterman Conservation Education Center she taught environmental conservation and team building skills to youth. While completing a Bachelor’s in Geology at SUNY Oneonta she had the opportunity to spend a week mapping canyons in the Mojave Desert in Southern California, and spent this past summer outside studying rivers in New York, experiences which deepened her appreciation of the natural world, our place within it and our responsibility toward it. She hopes to instill enthusiasm for the outdoors in the children she works with, and looks forward to sharing her outdoor skills and knowledge with all the kids at Avid4.

“My favorite part of working with youth is seeing them overcome personal obstacles and grow as individuals.”

Christine Clark – Instructor

Christine grew up in the foothills of Colorado, spending countless hours outdoors playing in the gullies, building forts in the trees and bushes and traveling and camping with her family. She is especially passionate about whitewater kayaking, rafting, SUPing (Stand Up Paddle Boarding) and getting others as excited about whitewater sports as she is. She spends every spare moment creek boating and freestyle kayaking in the creeks and rivers throughout Colorado. In the winter, she heads south to the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico where she soaks up the warm Mexico weather while guiding rafts and leading and instructing kayaking trips. She has also has accomplished high academic achievements, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Environmental Design from the University of Colorado, Boulder and Master’s degrees in Landscape Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Colorado, Denver.

Coquette Collins – Instructor

Coquette is a native Kansan who has always had a keen interest in nature and athletic activities. Her childhood weekends and summers were spent hiking, kneeboarding, boating and jet skiing on a large lake in Missouri. Coquette graduated from KSU with a BS in Computer Science and began a career in IT, Project and Process Management; during her free time she would hike, ski, backpack and scuba dive. While Coquette’s profession was satisfying, it kept leading her away from outdoor endeavors, and she knew it was time for a change. For the past year, she has been enrolled in the Outdoor Leadership Program at Greenfield Community College in Western Massachusetts, where she has gained more experience in canoeing, kayaking, Nordic skiing, rock climbing, Leave No Trace ethics, challenge courses and backcountry travel. Coquette is very excited to be able to share her passion for enjoying what nature has to offer and to add her personal experience and her newly honed skills to the Avid4 team.

Lacey Dodge – Instructor

Lacey grew up in Montana, spending most of her free time exploring the woods behind her house. She attended the University of Denver to study environmental science, with the goal of protecting the natural world she had grown to love so much. However, since graduating Lacey has realized a much bigger environmental issue; many kids today have never had the opportunity to build a lasting connection with nature. Her new passion has become introducing kids to the amazing adventures that await them when they’re willing to step outside. Lacey has worked as a ski instructor for five winters and at summer camps throughout the country. A bit of a nomad, she has lived in 10 different states in the last eight years. She is now working on a degree in therapeutic recreation in order to further her goal of introducing kids to the wonders of nature.

Candice Finn – Instructor & Art Teacher

Candice Finn grew up in northern New Jersey, about an hour from the Gunks, and graduated with an art education degree from Penn State University. Following college, Candice taught in the public school system for seven years before she and her husband (who she lovingly refers to as her own personal guide) moved to Colorado six years ago. She loves to teach, play outside and create art; Candice is psyched to have found a position at Avid4 where she finally gets to do all three at once! When she is not playing outside, she can be found in the studio making functional ceramics.

Daniel Fluharty – Instructor

Daniel has had a love for the outdoors since he began climbing, kayaking, hiking and mountain biking in his home state of Arkansas. While studying recreation management and playing D-1 soccer at Western Kentucky University he could often be found climbing in Red River Gorge, but his passion for the outdoors really took off when he moved to Colorado three years ago to continue his outdoor recreation degree at Metropolitan State College of Denver. Since moving west, Daniel has been climbing and guiding all over Colorado and Utah and has helped lead courses in backpacking, camping, rock climbing, Leave No Trace and canyoneering through Metropolitan State. His passion for working with kids can be seen through his many years of volunteer work with middle school kids in Arvada through a program called YoungLife.

Daniel has completed an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor course and plans to continue his AMGA guiding education.

“I love seeing how kids are willing to push their outdoor limits when they are given the chance. Passion for the outdoors is important in a child’s development and I love being able to pass my passion on.”

Amanda Gadomski – Instructor

Amanda grew up in the wild suburbs of Chicago before moving to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to attend school at Northern Michigan University. It was during her time in the U.P. that Amanda first fell in love with nature and the outdoors. After graduating with a degree in Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management and a minor in Art and Design, Amanda moved to Longmont, CO to work at an after-school program and was astounded to learn that some of her students had never been to the mountains. Watching these same students actively learning new things about the outdoors and tackling obstacles outside their comfort zones was an incredibly rewarding experience for Amanda, and her position as a positive role model who could help kids build self esteem was a source of pride. After her time in Northern Michigan, Amanda is still trying to figure out how to enjoy the warm Colorado winters. During the summers and falls, she especially enjoys camping and living out of a tent almost every weekend.

Kristin Glovac – Instructor

Kristin grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, spending her summers camping, fishing and hiking with her family all over Michigan. Following a desire to see and explore mountains, she studied abroad in the Indian Himalayas; ever since her passion for the outdoors has only grown greater. Kristin discovered her love for working with kids during her summers in college, when she was an instructor at Safety Town. She is looking forward to combining both her passion for kids and the outdoors while working with Avid4.

Janine Grossman – Instructor

Janine’s love for the outdoors began at a young age, when she spent any free moment she had in her family’s 40+ acres of farm land and woods on their dairy farm in western New York. Janine worked as a camp counselor for three summers after high school and pursued a degree in youth ministry. During her last semester of college, she went on a week-long wilderness trip and was instantly hooked. After graduating from Baptist Bible College with a bachelor’s degree in 2004, she worked on a local dairy farm to pay off her school loans. Her yearning to work with youth in the outdoors didn’t disappear, though, and finally in 2006 she graduated from a NOLS Rocky Mountain Outdoor Educator Course. Afterward, she worked for Wilderness Adventure at Eagle Landing in Virginia for a year and a half as a group facilitator and summer trip guide. However, Janine’s love for the Rocky Mountains still called, so she moved to Boulder with her fiance this spring. She loves to work with kids, teens and adults and to help them maximize their fun outside. She also enjoys mountain biking, hiking, backpacking and camping in her free time.

Mac Harn – Instructor

Mac grew up fishing, hiking and biking in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. He moved to North Coast to attend Humboldt State University, where he studied recreation and explored ancient redwood forests and the kelp forests of the Pacific. After graduating he took a job as a guide manager for an adventure tour company on the Kern River. Recently, Mac completed his student-teaching requirements to be a licensed elementary educator. With the school year coming to an end and summer just beginning, Mac can’t wait to get on the water.

Kelly Harrington – Instructor

A Chicago native, Kelly’s passion for the mountains and the outdoors brought her to Fort Collins in 2003, where she earned a Bachelor’s in Psychology at CSU. During the summers she followed her love for whitewater rafting and worked as a river guide for five years. After taking some time off to travel, she now lives in Boulder, where she is studying for a Master’s in School Counseling at the University of Colorado, Denver. Her ‘free time’ is split between volunteering as a group leader for at-risk kids and feeding her need to be outdoors, whether on the trail or on the river. Her ultimate goal for the future is to lead therapeutic multi-day wilderness trips for children.

Megan Hebbe – Instructor

Megan grew up in Northern Virginia, half-an-hour from D.C. and a mere two hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains, where she often helped her father with his duties as a PATC trail overseer on the Appalachian Trail. After a childhood spent exploring outside, riding her bike and meandering along creeks, Megan attended that College of William and Mary, where she studied psychology and was an active member of the cycling and running teams and worked as an aide for the Winter Camping in the Adirondacks class. Always a running nerd, Running with the Buffaloes inspired her move to Boulder, where she learned how to ski and paddle and earned a Master’s in Educational Psychology at CU Denver. After a two year stint in Portland working for Nike, Megan is returning to Boulder and Avid4, where she’ll continue to compete in cycling and running races. Megan is always thrilled to share her passion, knowledge and enthusiasm with campers and colleagues both.

Terra Hoover – Instructor

Terra, a native of Colorado, grew up camping, hiking, fishing and scrambling on rocks. She believes that growing up in the Colorado mountains helped shape who she is and her goal is to use outdoor recreation to teach kids about stewardship, dedication, and leadership. Over the years, Terra has spent every spare moment outside, guiding and participating in outdoor excursions. She found her calling while leading trips as an officer of the University of Denver’s Alpine Club, and has been a professional sea kayak guide in the San Juan Islands. If she’s not working you can probably find her climbing somewhere high on the rock walls of Colorado. She is certified in Swift Water Rescue, Wilderness First Responder, and CPR.

He spent his last summer traveling throughout the West exploring a multitude of climbing, mountain biking and backcountry destinations. He recently took a solo bike tour from Boulder to Montana and east to his hometown of Owego, New York.

Courtney Laurell – Instructor

Born and raised in the forests of Michigan, Courtney spent her childhood playing with bugs and making forts. When she was 16 she spent her first month in the backcountry on an Outward Bound course in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, and since then her hunger for nature immersion has never sated. Courtney studied ecopsychology at Prescott College and more recently earned her California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She has been working as a naturalist for the past six years at various outdoor schools in California and has spent the past five summers educating folk from all over the world in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Courtney is extremely excited to plant some roots in one of her favorite states.  In anticipation of a great summer, she’s mixed up her love of kids, nature and adventure education and is excited to serve it up to all the fantastic families that will be participating in Avid4 programs!

Jason joined the military after growing up in Phoenix, AZ and travelled around the world before discharging and moving to Colorado, where he discovered rock climbing and mountaineering. In addition to ski instructing at Eldora and cruising the streets of Denver as a bike messenger, Jason is an AMGA certified guide who enjoys introducing people to the many adventures they can have in the backyard of the Front Range.

In addition to his AMGA certification as a single pitch climbing instructor, Jason is an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Instructor and a Wilderness First Responder. When not working or climbing in Estes Park, he can often be found mountain biking and trail running with his wolf-dog Butters or pursuing his interest in photography.

Jennifer McCoy – Instructor

Jen McCoy grew up under the guidance of aid-worker parents in Swaziland, Africa where she sneaked in an education at an international school and volunteer work at a local hospital between her long rambles in the wild looking for warthogs and dung beetles. She believes a strong outdoor education creates kids of character and readies them for life. Now an EMT with a bachelor’s degree in languages, Jen has worked as a teacher at a combined elementary school and a counselor for at-risk youth in San Francisco. She has spent four years guiding clients to leopard sharks in San Diego, black-chinned dolphins in Chile and pikas (her favorite American mammal) in the Rocky Mountains. Between teaching and guiding, Jen has cooked, farmed and penny-pinched her way through 32 foreign countries, taking time along the way to rock climb in the Italian Dolomites, backpack in the moss forests of Papua New Guinea and hitchhike across the Sahara Desert. Just back from a year spent on the beautiful rivers of northern Patagonia, she’s eager to share her love of outdoor adventure with the next generation.

Amanda Miarecki – Instructor

Growing up, Amanda spent a lot of her time outdoors and camping. Since she didn’t have many opportunities to travel before college, she spent her undergraduate years studying abroad as much as possible, spending semesters in Australia, New Zealand and the American and British Virgin Islands, where she did participated in just about every outdoor activity that came her way, including kayaking, backpacking, surfing, canyoneering, rock climbing, canyon swinging, SCUBA diving and river surfing. Amanda recently completed her studies in Political Science at Michigan State University and relocated to Colorado to pursue an Environmental Law degree and work for UNICEF. Enrolling in every climbing class available and participating in various climbing trips to Kentucky’s Red River Gorge and the ‘Gunks in upstate New York quickly developed a deep-rooted passion. After graduating, Alex’s pioneering spirit led her to the bright lights of New York City, where the lack of nature forced her to expand her climbing pastime to foreign realms, including boulders in Central Park, statues, monuments and walls of buildings. After two years in the big city, Alex relocated to Boulder and is excited to explore the Mecca of outdoor adventure in Colorado.

Marc attended school at the University of Oregon before transferring to Boulder in 2010, where he’s finishing a B.A. in Psychology. Kevin Stiffler – Instructor

Hailing from Albany, NY, Kevin has accomplished many things in his short time on this earth but is always looking ahead. An avid gravity sport enthusiast, he first entered the extreme sports realm as a BMX racer – where he climbed the charts to become New York’s top ranked rider – before becoming interested in freestyle BMX, mountain biking and downhill/freeride riding. Not content to stay in one place, Kevin has backpacked through Europe and spent two years living in a sub-compact car, traveling over 100,000 with his trusty pooch sitting shot-gun the whole time. He currently co-owns a bicycle shop in Boulder and frequents the local riding spots along the Front Range. Kevin also enjoys climbing – rock and ice – in his down time and is always up for hiking a 14er and snowboarding down.

In addition to his extreme sports background, Kevin has an A.S. in Mechanical Engineering, a B.S. in Applied Technology Education and a Masters in Online Education; he is currently pursuing his PhD. in Curriculum Development for Online Education while teaching with Insight Schools of Colorado. He has also worked with professional BMX and skateboard athletes at Pennsylvania’s Camp Woodward. In the next few years, Kevin hopes to still be adventuring, smiling and traveling as much as possible.

Jon Sullivan – Instructor

Hailing from San Diego, Jon has had a wide variety of recreation experience and a shared passion for both sea and alpine mountain lifestyles. After moving to Colorado 10 years ago, he began to explore the adventures to be found in the Rockies and discovered a passion for rock and alpine climbing and backcountry skiing. After spending a semester with the National Outdoor Leadership School, Jon mastered technical skills for multi-pitch and multi-day climbing and multi-day backcountry skiing, as well as receiving Wilderness First Responder and Leave No Trace Master Educator certifications. Upon returning home from his NOLS experience, he obtained an EMT certification and continues to study outdoor recreation and education. Jon currently lives in Fort Collins. When he’s not found skiing in Rocky Mountain National Park or climbing in Boulder Canyon, he is rolling around in the mulch with his two dogs, Lola and Keela.

Kate Taylor – Art Instructor

Kate is a Coloradan, born and raised, and can’t think of a good reason to be anywhere else. Her Rocky Mountain upbringing allowed her to experience and explore the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of Colorado and helped shape her into an individual who cherishes, respects and loves the outdoors – a love that she has partnered with a passion for the fine arts and teaching through a B.F.A in Watercolor Painting and a Master’s in Education. Never one to spend all her time inside, Kate has kept herself well-rounded by balancing her higher education studies with five summers of raft guiding and countless personal adventures hiking, climbing, rafting and just relaxing outside.

Monica Vatalaro – Instructor

Born and raised in New Jersey, Monica grew up exploring the Appalachian Trail, and the outdoors has always been an essential aspect of her life. Since then, sharing her passion for the outdoors and inspiring growth in herself and others has become a focus in her professional career as an outdoor educator. In college, she decided to major in outdoor recreation in hopes of combining her love for the outdoors and her desire to have a positive impact on society. It was during these years, leading trips through the Catskills and the Adirondacks, that she discovered exciting ways to empower participants and share an appreciation of our natural environment. After college, Monica pursued a career in outdoor education and adventure, spending two years working in the Finger Lakes Region of New York for a program aimed at breaking down barriers between urban and rural youth through team building initiatives and outdoor pursuits. Most recently Monica backpacked through the Hawaiian Islands before finding her way to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
